A damaged, weakened or decayed tooth can affect your comfort, appearance and ability to chew. Same-day dental crowns allow our dentists to restore and protect eligible teeth in a single visit using advanced CEREC technology.
At TLC Escondido Dental, Dr. Jorge Reyes and Dr. Catalina Madrigal provide custom zirconia and Emax crowns designed to blend naturally with your smile. With digital scanning and in-office milling, many patients can leave with their permanent crown the same day.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown, sometimes called a dental cap, is a custom restoration that covers the visible portion of a damaged or weakened tooth. It restores the tooth’s shape, size, strength and appearance while helping protect it from further damage.
Dental crowns may be recommended to:
- Strengthen a cracked, fractured or weakened tooth
- Restore a tooth damaged by decay
- Protect a tooth after root canal treatment
- Support a tooth with a large dental filling
- Improve the appearance of a misshapen or severely discolored tooth
- Anchor a dental bridge
- Complete a dental implant
- Restore comfortable chewing and proper bite function
Our dentists use high-quality, tooth-colored materials to create crowns that are designed for strength, function and a natural appearance.
What Is a Same-Day Dental Crown?
A same-day dental crown is designed, created and placed during one appointment. Traditional crowns often require a temporary restoration and a second visit after an outside laboratory completes the final crown.
With CEREC same-day dentistry, our team can capture a digital impression, design your restoration and mill your crown in our office. This streamlined process eliminates the need for a traditional impression in many cases and may reduce the time required to complete treatment.
Benefits of Same-Day Dental Crowns
Same-day crowns may offer several advantages, including:
- Completion of treatment in a single visit
- No temporary crown in many cases
- No need for traditional impression material
- Digital design customized to your tooth and bite
- Durable, tooth-colored zirconia or Emax materials
- A precise fit supported by digital scanning
- Fewer appointments and less time away from work or family
- Immediate restoration of the tooth’s appearance and function
Not every tooth or treatment situation is appropriate for a same-day crown. Our dentists will evaluate your tooth and recommend the restoration that best supports your long-term oral health.
What to Expect During the Same-Day Crown Process
Examination and Treatment Planning
Your visit begins with an examination and digital imaging when needed. Our dentists will evaluate the tooth, surrounding tissues and bite to determine whether a crown is the right treatment.
Preparing the Tooth
Any damaged, decayed or weakened tooth structure is carefully removed. The tooth is then shaped to create a stable foundation for the crown.
Digital Impressions
CEREC Primescan is used to capture a detailed digital image of your tooth and surrounding teeth. This creates a three-dimensional model without the need for traditional impression trays in many cases.
Designing Your Crown
Our dentists design the crown digitally, taking your bite, tooth shape and surrounding smile into consideration. The restoration is customized for comfortable function and a natural appearance.
In-Office Milling
Your crown is created in our office using CEREC Primemill and a high-quality block of zirconia or Emax material. Milling time varies depending on the restoration and material selected.
Final Placement
Once the crown is complete, our dentists check its fit, shape, shade and bite. The restoration is then bonded securely to the prepared tooth.
Zirconia and Emax Dental Crowns
Our office uses zirconia and Emax materials for same-day dental crowns. The material selected depends on the location of the tooth, bite forces, cosmetic goals and clinical needs.
Zirconia Crowns
Zirconia is known for strength and durability. It may be recommended for back teeth or areas that experience significant chewing pressure.
Emax Crowns
Emax is a ceramic material valued for its lifelike translucency and natural appearance. It may be recommended when aesthetics are an important consideration.
Our dentists will explain which material is most appropriate for your tooth and why.
Who May Be a Candidate for a Same-Day Crown?
You may be a candidate for a same-day crown if you have:
- A cracked or fractured tooth
- A large cavity or failing filling
- A weakened tooth after root canal treatment
- A tooth that needs significant structural support
- A damaged or worn existing crown
- A misshapen or severely discolored tooth
- A dental implant that is ready for its final restoration
Some complex cases may require additional treatment or a laboratory-created restoration. A complete evaluation is needed to determine the best option for your smile.
Advanced CEREC Training and Technology
Dr. Jorge Reyes and Dr. Catalina Madrigal have completed extensive continuing education in restorative dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, CEREC and digital dentistry. Their advanced training includes CEREC Master Training and more than 100 hours of education in CEREC and digital workflows.
Our office has used CEREC same-day crown technology for approximately 10 years. Our in-office system includes CEREC Primescan for digital impressions and CEREC Primemill for creating custom restorations.
This combination of experience, technology and personalized care allows our team to provide efficient treatment without sacrificing attention to detail.
How to Care for a Same-Day Crown
A same-day crown should be cared for much like a natural tooth. Brush twice daily, floss carefully around the crown and attend regular dental cleanings and examinations.
Although the crown itself cannot develop decay, the natural tooth beneath it and the surrounding gum tissue can still be affected by plaque. Avoid chewing ice, opening packages with your teeth and other habits that may damage the restoration.
Same-Day Dental Crown FAQs
Can a dental crown really be completed in one day?
Yes. CEREC technology allows our dentists to scan, design, mill and place many permanent crowns during one appointment. Some complex cases may still require a different treatment approach.
How long does a same-day crown appointment take?
The appointment length varies depending on the tooth and treatment needs. The process generally includes tooth preparation, digital scanning, crown design, in-office milling and final placement.
Are same-day crowns permanent?
Same-day crowns are permanent restorations, not temporary crowns. They are bonded to the prepared tooth and designed for long-term use with proper care.
Are same-day crowns as strong as traditional crowns?
Same-day crowns are made from durable ceramic materials such as zirconia and Emax. The appropriate material is selected based on the tooth’s location, bite forces and treatment needs.
Is getting a dental crown painful?
The treatment area is numbed to help keep you comfortable during tooth preparation. Mild sensitivity or tenderness may occur afterward, but it usually improves as the tooth adjusts.
Will my same-day crown look natural?
The crown is customized to complement the shape, size and color of your surrounding teeth. Zirconia and Emax materials are tooth-colored and selected with both function and appearance in mind.
How long do same-day dental crowns last?
The lifespan of a crown depends on oral hygiene, bite forces, habits, material and regular professional care. With proper maintenance, a crown may provide many years of service.
Can a same-day crown repair a broken tooth?
A crown may restore a broken tooth when enough healthy structure remains to support it. Teeth with extensive damage may require additional treatment or another option.
How much does a same-day dental crown cost?
The cost depends on the tooth, crown material, insurance coverage and any additional treatment needed. After your evaluation, our team will provide a personalized estimate.
Are financing options available for same-day crowns?
Financial options may be available to help make treatment more manageable. Visit our financial options page and membership plan page to learn more.
