Gum Grafting

If the health of your gums has been impacted by periodontal disease, gum recession or other factors, our dentists may recommend a gum grafting procedure to help you regain healthy gums and a balanced smile. We will evaluate your mouth and smile carefully to determine if this procedure is the right option for you.

What Is Gum Grafting?

Gum grafting, also known as soft tissue grafting, is a procedure used to correct gum recession or improve the appearance of an uneven gum line. When you receive gum grafting, our periodontist will stitch grafted tissue onto the areas of your gums that need additional tissue. This new gum tissue may be taken from another area of your mouth or from a tissue bank. In some cases, we may use tissue-stimulating proteins to encourage your body’s natural growth abilities and promote faster healing following your procedure.

When Is Gum Grafting Recommended?

Gum grafting is usually recommended to treat gum recession, which may be caused by factors such as overaggressive brushing, poor dental hygiene, gum disease or use of tobacco products. If your gums have receded, receiving a gum graft is crucial to preventing additional problems from occurring, such as tooth sensitivity, exposed tooth roots, increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease, inflammation, bad breath and more.
